My Expectation:
Expect more from
yourself than from others------Rajib Kirtania
My expectation from this course (rather I would say my
expectation of gain) was high, since I was thinking to embark my career in this
domain. We made thrice, before the first class which forced me to contemplate
more. Mam told us on the very first day that this course is going to be very
different and Yes! It was, as mam argued to “Empty our cup” and “Unlearn
to Learn” through an experiment. She tried to break the ice of our perception about the course and also
collected it through an activity. This HALO effect told me that the class is
definitely going to be very interesting .That’s why we enjoyed, attending every
class.
Changing work place:
Relevance of IDIO?
With the positive vibe that we got from the first class, we
entered into the second session where we came to know the very dynamic nature
of work and work place. So this threw highlights on how should we prepare our
self to meet the demand of changing time. I believe, that was for us to
reinforce our belief, about the relevance of IDIO in the work place. At the end
of the session, I told my self “Rajib be open and adopt positive changes
quickly” to manage and work with millennials. The case study that mam had given
us informed us how companies are changing their structure and work place to
bring out more innovation, excellency,
flow and make their employees more productive. 3 box frame work is an excellent new tool for me to abreast with
the changing pace of time.
Managing yourself:
He who knows others
is clever, he who know himself is enlightened—Lao Tze
This session has taken me into new level of thinking of
managing myself and thus playing my strengths by discovering them through JOHARI window and RBS exercise. Johari
window helped me to understand that every one has open, blind, hidden and
unknown area to explore more about them self. To uncover my blind spot (Like they said my patience is
one of my asset) (which is a self of me known by others) RBS really played a big role. In the
class of exercise of identifying my own personal and professional trait, I came
to know more about me (Where to improve, where to focus), for this we rarely
find time to think.
“Each person’s
greatest room for growth is in his/ her greatest weakness”
Perception:
Questioning yourself is the best way to identify your
strength/weakness/value/your position. If you think you can and can’t----both
ways you are right. So what matter is your believe. After identifying your
strength, you need to believe it and work on it.
“People hear/say, what
they want to hear/say”
There are two aspect of perception that affect us, one my
perception about others and second other’s perception about me.
“We don’t see thing as they are, we see things as we are”
The video that mam showed us in the class, excellently
depicts what is perception and how does it affect us. Perception block our
mind, thus miss the opportunity of new ideas/opportunity. Perception affect our decision. To avoid this,
always think differently, look in a different perspective and start from zero.
What do you see in the following picture?
Factors influencing perception:
1.
Factors in the perceiver
2.
Factors in the situation
3.
Factors in the perceived
Knowing this we can avoid the conflict. The difficult part is how
you can project yourself so that people see you the way you are or the way you
want others see you.
Now I know how mistakenly I have judged many people without
talking to them, which affected my relationship with others. Thank you mam, now
I will be more careful. People perceive me that I am patience, reticent and
serious. Now I know how to change people’s perception about me.
People build perception at the first impression or over a
period of time which is what known as mental model perception. Gestalt
principle and contrast effect explain how perception is built.
Prejudice and Stereotyping are the result of perception.
Attribution:
Attribution theory is concerned with how individuals
interpret events and how this relates to their thinking and behaviour. After
knowing attribution theory, I am very much concern about not to get affected by
Halo and Horn effect. Self serving biases may play pivotal
role in a team while taking credit.
Unconsciously many times, my decision was affected by self serving biases.
“It is “our” success but “their”
failure”
We see others through microscope. While attributing decide
based on Distinctiveness, consensus, consistency. Blunder in attribution to blame
people.
Self Fulfilling Prophecy:
“Pygmalion in management” is best case study regarding self
fulfilling Prophecies. It is a prediction that directly or indirectly
causes itself to become true. It has got two aspects like if I believe from the
core of heart that I can do this, then indeed I will be able to do that so it
become a self fulfilling prophecy and another aspect is if I believe that my
team can outperform other, then they will do. This is applicable in other way
also. This actually led to power of expectation which can generate magic. I
used to sue this on my students which resulted good outcome.
What you see in our self?
Power of expectation:
TheGolem Effect: Negative expectations
will produce negative behaviours.
TheGalatea Effect: Whether
you think you can or can't…you are right.
PERSONALITY:
The word personality is derived from the Latin word “Persona” which
means mask. So is it correct to say that personality is the mask that a person
puts on to portray himself the way he/she wants to? Is it that mask that a
person puts on to pretend? Yes? No? May be? Well the right answer should be “It
depends”. It depends on the way the person portrays himself/herself is the
way he/she is or even that is put on?
How one’s personality get shaped? Well, the environment in which
he/she was brought up, heredity and situation give one’s what we call it
personality.
So what is the difference between personality and character? If I need
to choose any I will go for character.
What is your personality type? How
do we know that? Well go for MBTI test. The test has given me a four letter
combination with percentage for each. INFJ (Introvert 44%, iNtuitive 38%, Feeling 25%, Judging 44%). So the test reveals
that I am an introvert. Yes I am and I enjoy being that. That’s why I have few
but good friends with deep relationship. Do I need to change my personality
type? Again it depends on the situation.
Ethics:
How do we define ethics? What is the difference between
ethics? Which one will you follow if there is a conflict between these two? If
you ask me I will follow ethics. Why? Because laws are made to maintain ethics.
So what is ethics? Best define would be what is good for greater number is
ethics.
It is easy to talk about ethics but very difficult to
maintain. And yes Viji, you went deep by your great act that you played to
illustrate how (un) ethical we are. From now, if we ever face ethical dilemma,
we will remember your this great act.
“Your attitude defines
your life”
ATTITUDE:
The way we
react/response to particular situation and is an expression of
favor or disfavor toward a person, place, thing, or event.
If there is a clash between talent and attitude, I will always choose
attitude because with learning attitude you can build talent.
My take:
At the last I must say, yes Viji you met, not met but
exceeded my expectation. You have equipped us with all the mental weapon needed
to lead a successful happy ethical (to the extend you can) life, by not living
a judgemental life, by having right attitude, by believing in our self and on
others, by playing our strengths, by not building mental model of perception and
ultimately by applying principle to manage or improve our self. You have given
us the weapon to manipulate people for the greater good of society. I accept
that in practical life I would face many dilemma but now I would be able to
take an informed decision. Now I feel
more confident about myself and my strengths. I think I will be the best
manager.
